FALL RETREAT Q & A

Frequently Asked Questions - Here are answers to some of the most common questions.

Fall Retreat Overview

Thousand Pines is a beautiful well kept 255-acre retreat center with nice accommodations less than one mile from Lake Gregory in the San Bernardino National Forest. Beat the heat with cooler temperatures here.

Cabins and yurts are offered for your stay. When you register, you will answer a few questions. We place you according to your answers and are happy to find you roommates; and many attend that don't know anyone. We offer many opportunities to build friendships. Main camp features the dining hall, Malt Shop, Big Oak Cafe, and the many fun activities.

You will need to bring your own bedding and/or a sleeping bag, pillow, toiletries and towels. Mattress pads are newer, 5 inches thick and have very clean accommodations. This is our first year to use the new Whittier Worship Center with a balcony in the back of the building with a beautiful forest view and seating.

The retreat features Biblical teaching, praise and worship, prayer and ministry, and time for fun together.  Carpool coordination will be offered a week before the retreat.

Q.  What happens if I don't know anyone and come alone?
A.   We always have many singles that are attending by themselves that do not know anyone. You're in good hands! We are very friendly and you'll make new friends. We encourage you to attend even if you don't know anyone. We offer group breakout sessions, a fun Friday night meet and greet, and other group activities. If you don't have roommate requests, we are happy to find roommates for you. The registrar prays over each selection. Many wonderful friendships have been made this way!

Q.  Where Will I Stay?
A.  There are two options at the FALL SINGLES RETREAT to choose for your stay: CABINS OR YURTS. The number placed in cabins and yurts are based on the numbers that register and registration answers. This is a beautiful and clean retreat center!

CEDAR'S CABINS
The Cedar's Cabins feature bathroom sinks, bathroom stalls and shower with bookcases, and a box fan. Mattress pads are 5 inches thick on bunkbeds in the cabins near Whittier Worship Center.

YURTS
Yurts are on a foundation with a thick canvas in a circle design featuring bunkbeds, 5 inch thick mattresses, electricity and a light. There is a sky light in the center at the top for sunlight and viewing the sky and stars. Located near the women's and men's shower houses that include multi showers, sinks and bathroom stalls.

Q. How many are in a cabin or yurt?
A.  We place the lowest number in the cabins and yurts depending on how many register and the number of cabins and yurts we are given for our group. In 2014, most people chose to stay in a cabin. Some yurts only had 4-6 people. Men and women do not share the same cabin or yurt.

Q.  What does the pricing include?
A.   The pricing is per person and we offer low retreat prices with payment options. Buffet-style meals are included in the dining hall sitting with our group. There are retreat sessions that offer Biblical teaching by speakers, workshop speakers, prayer and ministry time, and fun as well. Group activities and other free time activities are offered.

Q.  When can I register at the retreat?
A.  Registration opens on Friday at 4pm in front of Whittier Worship Center (WWC). WWC is located to the left side of the parking lot, near the volleyball court.

Dinner begins in the dining hall 6:30-7:30pm. If you arrive after dinner, then proceed to the Whittier Worship Center located to the left side of the parking lot. You'll be able to register there. If you can come at 4pm, you'll have time to relax and get setup and visit the Malt Shop or Big Oak Cafe, take a walk, meet new friends or say hello to ones you know, play ping pong, lay in a hammock under the pine trees and play in the game room.  Our first retreat session will begin at 8pm in the WWC. We will kick off the retreat with a fun meet and greet mixer with comedian, Mike Cano. It will give you an opportunity to make new friends right from the start!

When you register, you'll receive more details by email the week of the retreat.  Want to carpool?  You'll receive carpool information via email to those that have signed up prior to the retreat.

 Q.  How is the food?  When is dinner on Friday night and what happens if I'm late?
A.  The food is really good! Meals are served buffet-style and dinner is Friday 6:30-7:30pm. The first session begins in Whittier Worship Center at 7:45pm.  If you can't make it there for dinner (due to work or other reasons) then we suggest you eat on the way if arriving after 7:30pm. Registration begins in the dining hall at 4pm and continues through dinner served 6:30-7:30pm. We have a designated group area. We are the Single+Passion group. Beverages are available 24/7 in the dining hall. We'll also have coffee and water available in the lobby at Whittier Worship Center.

Q.  What activities are offered?
A.  Please consult the FALL Retreat page for most indoor and outdoor activities on Saturday afternoon and Sunday afternoon free-time.  Most of the activities are free, but there are a few activities that do have a nominal fee at Thousand Pines. Lake Gregory Regional Park is less than a mile away and has the new SPLASH ISLAND with many fun options to lay on the swim beach, play on the air toys, waterslides and watersports. Lake Gregory rents belly boards, aqua cycles, pedal boats, kayaks, canoes, stand-up paddle boards, wind surfers, sail boats, row boats and electric motor boats. If you visit Lake Arrowhead Village (8 miles away), then bring shopping and restaurant money and Lake Arrowhead Queen Boat Tour $16.
If you choose to stay on the grounds, Thousand Pines have many amenities.  We do offer group hikes which also includes a night hike on Saturday night. There's alot of fun things to do at Thousand Pines offered as group signups! Activities are optional.

The adventure course is awesome for only $5!  You'll climb the 322' rock wall with 3 skill levels and then zip line 20 miles per hour 400 feet. Or, use team work as a group to get the lower ropes course. The mountain bike guided tour takes you through the pines for only $5. If you bring your own mountain bike then its free. Paintball in the Pines with paintballs and equipment included for only $10. Skate Park $10. A BB Gun and Archery range is very inexpensive. Frisbee golf, horseshoes, basketball, volleyball, swimming pool, ping pong and the game room is all free. You may prefer to relax and even rest in one of many hammocks in center camp.

You'll enjoy the surroundings and cooler temperatures in the San Bernardino mountains.

Q.  What are the men and women ratio? How many attend?
A.   That's a great question!  We pray for an even number and don't know until the retreat.  We have people add in at the last moment at retreats. And, as long as we have space, we want to fill all open spots.  We suggest that everyone personally post, share and invite their single friends on social media and by personal invitation. Calling is the best method! Ladies, we are great networkers. This year we are nearing 100 signed up.

Q.  Where is the retreat posted?
A.  The retreat is posted on numerous meetups, Facebook, public posts, Christian events sites  and emailed out via Constant Contact to the Single+Passion Ministries database.  We welcome you to share about this awesome retreat whereever you can post it and hand out flyers!  When you post on social media, include http://www.SoCalSinglesRetreat.com. There is no retreat like it in So Cal!  This will only be our 4th year hosting a singles retreat at Thousand Pines.

Q. What about child(ren) attending the retreat?
A.  Miss Kimberly takes the kids during the retreat sessions to allow single parents their own time. She will have crafts, snacks, game room visits, and Biblical teaching for kids. We have had anywhere from 6-14 children at retreats in past years. Single parents will be housed in family cabins. This is a great place to build special memories with your child.

If you bring a child that is not your own, we require that you bring a handwritten letter from the parent(s) of the child(ren) stating that they have placed him or her in your care and giving permission to treat the child in case of an emergency. Please make sure the note names you, and includes the parents complete contact information. You are to know where you're child(ren) are at all times. We do not take responsibility for your children, and by attending the retreat, you legally release Single+Passion Ministries, Thousand Pines and all volunteers, staff and other affiliations to the retreat harmless. You will fill out a Thousand Pines release form arriving at the retreat for each person.
